Adel Abdessemed: Mon Enfant

MÉMORIAL DE LA SHOAH, PARIS

To mark the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, the Shoah Memorial has invited contemporary artist Adel Abdessemed to present, in the crypt, a series of works entitled "My Child": a sculpture and a series of drawings inspired by the emblematic photograph N° 14 that S.S. Jürgen Stroop sent to Krüger and Himmler, documenting the repression of the uprising in April-May 1943.

Beyond the historicity of the photograph, the artist brings out, through the materiality of the sculpture, its almost living density, its delicacy, the poignant, universal figure of childhood brutally condemned, of surrender and terror. Reactivating this image, notably through his drawings that "deconstruct" it, Adel Abdessemed not only reexamines its controversial meaning, but above all pays homage to this child, offering him, as he puts it, "the immortality of a work of art".
