Michael Gross [1920-2004]
October 14 - November 19, 2005

"...Reading one of Michael Gross's paintings demands total concentration, as one strives to decipher the enigmatic truth of what one is seeing, that is, to strip away the layers of seeing and arrive at the essence of the object. It also involves an act of reconstruction, of piecing together the artist's creative process."

[Yigal Zalmona, from the catalogue "Michael Gross: Recent Works", Israel Museum, Jerusalem, February-March 2002]

Dvir Gallery is honored to announce the opening of a new solo show by Michael Gross, a memorial show which marks a year to the artist's passing. On display there will be a collection of some of Gross's most seminal works - painting and sculpture - among them: Dakar III, 2000 [oil on canvas, 196x213 cm.] and Figure, 2001 [oil on canvas, 245x142 cm.] Additional paper works - prints and drawings - of which some were never exposed to the public, are available at the gallery's office, and will be shown upon request.

Michael Gross, one of Israel's most prominent artists to date, passed away last year at the age of 84. His ongoing devotion and enthusiasm to art-making led to the creation of a rich and solid body of work. His strong motivation is to be seen as a salient feature in Gross's long artistic career which lasted until his very last day.

Gross, a Sabra [born in Tiberia], was initially educated as an architect, at the Haifa Technion, and then as an artist, in Paris. In the year 2000 he was laurated the prestigious Israeli Prize for Sculpture. An extensive retrospective of his work is now on display at the Haifa Museum of Art [curator: Daniella Talmor]. Dvir Gallery's relationship with Michael Gross dates back to the gallery's early days, in the early 1980s. His first show in the gallery's old venue [on Gordon St.] took place in March and April 1983, and was called "Eight New Works" [catalogue available].
